Foot Pain

Foot Pain? How A TOG GaitScan™ Could Help

It is a surprising fact, that one-quarter of all the bones in the body are contained in the feet! Each foot has 26 bones, 33 joints, 19 muscles and 107 ligaments that have to support our whole weight, every day.

Do you dread stepping out of bed in the morning because of pain in your feet?

Even small faults with the biomechanics of our feet can cause changes in the way we walk and in our posture, leading to problems including:

  • Localised foot pain
  • Bunions or hammer-toes
  • Arch, heel and ankle pain
  • Lower limb problems including shin splints
  • Knee and hip problems during running or walking due to misalignment

Many of these are problems that can be resolved with foot orthotics. However, the problems for clinicians in the past were twofold:

  1. Making an accurateanalysis of patient biomechanics to arrive at a diagnosis of the problem
  2. Prescribing a correctlyfitting orthotic to correct it

Are you avoiding physical activities you used to enjoy because you know that your foot pain will flair up?

At Arnhem Physiotherapy, we work alongside a team of Podiatrists and we are able to offer our patients an assessment using the TOG GaitScan™. This innovative diagnostic tool allows us to make a correct analysis of the gait of each patient and identify biomechanical issues that are giving rise to problems. The machine is entirely non-invasive and scans at 300 frames per second, using thousands of sensors.

Once a diagnosis has been made, custom orthotics (if indicated), can be made exactly to the size, shape and requirements of the individual patient enabling them to get back to enjoying activities they have had to avoid due to foot pain concerns . Call us on (08) 8919 4727 and book your TOG GaitScan™ today!

The Benefits of Custom Orthotics

At Arnhem Physiotherapy, the TOG GaitScan™ is an important part of the comprehensive diagnostic assessment we carry out. This begins with taking a thorough history of any injuries you may have sustained, current health problems, any areas of pain or discomfort including hip or knee pain, mobility problems, and the type of footwear you normally wear. In addition, a treadmill running assessment will allow our Physiotherapist to observe biomechanics while you are running.

Have you been told that it is a heel spur and there is nothing you can do about it?

The gait scan provides the clinician with so much more information than could ever be assessed with the naked eye. Over a million points of data are recorded to identify even the most minor of biomechanical problems. The machine is invaluable in highlighting things that could develop into painful conditions and mobility issues if not addressed – and enables us to identify problems that clinicians who do not have the advantage of the TOG GaitscanTM machine could have missed, or misdiagnosed as a heel spur or other problem.

This two-stage analysis enables us to consider all the factors that may be contributing to your lower limb and foot pain. We can then assess the physiotherapy treatment and corrective exercises, perhaps including Clinical Pilates that could be of benefit, as well as considering whether custom orthotics would be of benefit in your case.

What To Expect From A Gait Scan Analysis

The first thing to say is that this is a completely non-invasive and pain-free procedure.

Patients stand on and walk across a force plate. After measuring timing sequences and mapping foot pressure an in-depth visual report is created. The whole analysis takes around thirty minutes to perform and allows the physiotherapist to detect any abnormalities in foot function.

If custom orthotics would be of benefit to you, there is a range available for your requirements. Whether you are a runner, a dancer or simply want to be able to get on with everyday activities, pain-free, TOG orthotics are available to fit almost any type of shoe or sandal. Orthotics are unobtrusive, comfortable, and flexible and have been demonstrated to correct the biomechanical causes of foot pain and produce improved balance and posture.
