Most of us, at one stage or another during our exercise training have been instructed on ‘controlling’ our pattern of breathing. Traditional Pilates instructs you to breathe out on exertion, however, Clinical Pilates does not rely on expiration for a number of reasons, most importantly this is not how your body functions with life’s movements.
During Clinical Pilates breath using your normal patterns of inspiration and expiration.
If you find yourself holding your breath during a particular Clinical Pilates exercise simply relax your shoulders, breathe normally and then recommence the movement during your breath in. As you continue your dynamic movements your can then continue in your relaxed breathing pattern.
This allows both local (deep muscles) to integrate with global muscles (larger moving muscles), allowing more efficient, normal function.
So remember… relax your shoulders and breath normally throughout all of your Pilates exercises.
“Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit” Joseph Pilates
